MINSU meets... Iain Forbes (Nothing More To Say) 001

Where are you from and when did you start working in the creative industries? I’m from Aberdeen, Scotland. I first started working in the creative industries at the start of 2013 when I got a job working as a PR for a small underground club called Snafu. After a few years the club closed down so I started a small Clubnight supporting local DJs. After I got bored of that I started a new night called ‘Nothing More To Say’ booking bigger acts, we turn 3 in March next year! Throughout the years I have done a bit of producing and DJing too and have played across Scotland and Andorra too. What projects are you currently working on? I am currently down in London doing a bit of work experience with Defected Records, it’s great to have an incite into how such a big label runs. Alongside this I’m continuing to plan parties with my ‘Nothing More To Say’ crew. We’ve got a lot of big bookings coming up and some more partnerships with big festivals in the planning stages for next year. What is the creative scene like where you are? The creative scene is okay, obviously we are a smaller city than Glasgow or Edinburgh but we still have a lot of talent whether that be through music, art or any other means. There are a lot of great promoters putting on interesting parties for the love of it and not just for money, however there are still a lot doing it because they think its cool or for social status. I also think that as a city we aren’t very good at collaborating or promoting local talent, when someone tries something bold people often laugh rather than support. If more people would get behind individuals in the city trying something different then we would be a lot better off. What would you say have been your career highlights so far? Promoter wise, It would have to be finally booking Bicep for a set in Aberdeen. It was a dream we had when we were putting the idea for the club night together, and we had bombarded their agent for almost two years and then finally the effort paid off, so that was a nice feeling. Another Highlight was hosting an afterparty down at the beach after one of our nights, we managed to get a generator to power the speakers and hundreds of people came and saw the most amazing sunrise. Finally, we also got to host a stage at a snow festival in Andorra with Midland, Ben UFO and Or:la which was also a great experience. DJ wise, I’ve been lucky enough to warm up for Skream, Jackmaster, Bicep etc etc so that has been pretty cool, either that or playing at The Arches in Glasgow before it shut down! We are all about collaboration – do you think this is an important part of creating and if so then how has it changed the way you work? Yes, collaboration is a really important part of creating, sometimes it’s nice even just to get a second opinion or bounce ideas off each other. You can get so caught up in your work sometimes that you forget what you originally started out wanting to do, so its nice to have someone there to keep you straight. One of the reason’s I got put off producing records was how hard it was to find a vocalist for tracks and this is why I think Minsu would be a really useful app and change the way I work completely. Who was/is your main influence? The nightclub Snafu was my main influence, it was my musical education and the reason I’m doing any of the things I’m doing today. Special mention to George Russell who was the club programmer at the time and also runs ‘Bigfoots Tea Party’ who do great parties across Scotland and occasionally in Berlin too, I learned a lot from just being around him.
